Kenneth Hudson looks at the Ins and Outs of Pawnbroking
The old song echoes what most people think about pawnbroking-the ' pop shop ' down a back alley, full of bundles of old clothes, an image of poverty and social stigma. But ' Uncle' was as important as the butcher or the baker and lent money on the most unlikely things.
Today, we don't mind talking about a mortgage or an overdraft and even boast about our credit rating, but pawning seems different. Anyway, after 30 years of the welfare state, few people know how to set about pawning their belongings. Nevertheless, pawnbroking is coming back and in a new direction: pawnshops are opening alongside the high street banks and building societies. And a different kind of customer is securing instant money without fuss.
