Haley, an American Negro, travelled half-a-million miles and spent over ten years writing Roots - tracing his ancestors back to Africa armed only with family stories, a few words handed down through the generations, the name of an ancestor captured into slavery: Kunta Kinte.
At his home in Los Angeles, Alex Haley tells the fascinating story behind the writing of Roots and talks of the extraordinary response it brought from Americans, black and white.
