: The Discoverers

A series of six programmes with David Attenborough 5: The Unknown Ocean
Long after the rest of the world had been explored and mapped, vast areas of the Pacific Ocean remained uncharted and unknown. Even the continent of Australia was still spoken of as the mysterious ' Unknown Land of the South '.
Today DAVID ATTENBOROUGH tells the stories of three of the men who gave their lives exploring these unknown waters: VITUS BER-ING, JAMES COOK and MATTHEW FLINDERS.

: Abdication

Written and narrated by James Cameron
'I have found it impossible to discharge my duties as King without the help and support of the woman I love.'
(Abdication broadcast of KING EDWARD VIII, 10 December 1936)
The story of Edward VIII 's obsession for Mrs Simpson, the twice-divorced American for whom he gave up his throne, has passed into legend. Theirs was a love affair that began harmlessly enough, grew into a private scandal, and finally precipitated a constitutional crisis that threatened the very fabric of the British monarchy.
Could the Abdication have been prevented or did its seeds lie in Edward's own character and the times in which he lived? What was Mrs Simpson's role? Why was the crisis kept secret from the British people for so long? What really went on behind the scenes? In tonight's anniversary programme JAMES CAMERON considers these questions, and with the help of frank evidence from those close to the King or involved in the crisis, offers a fresh and critical interpretation of the events of those days. with LADY HARDINGE OF PENSHURST, LADY DIANA COOPER, THE EARL OF CARNARVON, JAMES MARGACH, ALISTAIR COOKE

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
