: STAR CHOICE

The stars of BBC series pick their favourite episodes
This week:
Thora Hird introduces
THE FIRST LADY starring
THORA HIRD
ROBERT KEEGAN , JAMES GROUT and HENRY KNOWLES in The First Stone by ALAN PLATER
Series devised by ALAN PLATER from an initial idea by ALAN PLATER and PHILIP LEVENE
Designer, Allan Anson
Script editor, Gerry Davis
Produced by DAVID E. ROSE
Is Sarah Danby 's persistence a genuine search for truth or could it be termed muck-raking? Sarah Danby, George Kingston, and Will Tarrant settle down for a quiet evening in their respective homes. But a chance remark by Tom Danby brings them together for a shattering series of revelations which hurts each in turn ...
In the opinion of Terence Dudley , who directed and wrote some episodes in the initial series, ' The First Stone ' was about the best of all the stories,' bringing together the four protagonists in a closely-knit situation, and throwing an unusually penetrating light on the character of Sarah Danby. Terence Dudley, incidentally, is the producer of a second series of First Lady stories which begins next week.

: THE GREAT STARS

of yesterday and today in a season of their most memorable films
JACK LEMMON, SHIRLEY MacLAINE in The Apartment with FRED MacMURRAY
Screenplay by BILLY WILDER and I. A. L. DIAMOND
Produced and directed by Billy Wilder
Continued in next column
An insurance clerk's apartment becomes a popular venue for his bosses' extra-marital entertaining, but the short-cut to promotion proves to be a dead end when his own emotions become involved.
This is a biting satire on American big business, and, though it begins as a comedy, it later switches dramatically to near-tragedy. Jack Lemmon , who was seen earlier this year in Days of Wine and Roses, makes the clerk, C. C. Baxter, into a real and convincing character, and Shirley MacLaine is also at her best as the girl who always falls for the wrong man.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
