: THE NATURALIST'S EYE

6-The Forest of Dean by Bruce Campbell, Ph.D.
Secretary of the British Trust for Ornithology
The Forest of Dean, in West Gloucestershire between the Severn and the Wye, contains the largest areas of continuous oak forest left in these islands. This gives naturalists an opportunity to study wild life under conditions closely resembling those in the vast woodlands which existed before man began to farm these islands. Mr. Campbell describes the life of the Forest of Dean, with special reference to birds.

: FREEDOM TOO FAST?

A conversation between
Kenneth Bradley
Director of the Imperial Institute and Alec Peterson late Director General of Information
Services. Federation of Malaya
A certain pattern-and an apparently disquieting pattern-seems to follow the first steps in colonial self-government. Provocative statements by colonial leaders, demands for immediate independence, and sometimes civil disturbance are reported after the first elections. Does this mean that the transfer of power to the people of these territories is made too quickly? Is Britain merely following a policy of ' scuttle'—as it has been called? Have these territories the resources-human or technical-to control their own destinies?
The speakers have bath had close experience of working with the peoples of the overseas countries: Kenneth Bradley in Africa and Alec Peterson in Asia.

: Then and Now: 6: Hopes Realised and Disappointed

by Bertrand Russell, O.M.
Bertrand Russell grew up an optimistic Liberal, favouring Free Trade and opposing the subjection of women. Looking back over eighty years his conclusion is that the internal developments in this country are welcome but the international scene has deteriorated. However, he still hopes to see realised sooner or later the things he thought good as a young man - security from war, the abolition of poverty, and a general growth of tolerance and kindly feeling.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
