Alexis, the unscrupulous antique-dealer, and his partner, Maxwell Craig, have obtained both the ancient manuscript and the golden scorpion that form the clues to the burial-place of the Pharaoh Horeb-Set, but these only lead to an empty tomb in the Valley of the Kings. With Major Cavendish, the archaeologist, still their prisoner, Alexis and Craig return to Cairo. But meanwhile Lord Saxmunden and the rest of Cavendish's expedition, excavating near the village of Tel Amara, find a second wooden box buried in the ruins of an old temple.
