It was while he was a student at the Leningrad Conservatoire that Shostakovich, at the age of nineteen, wrote his First Symphony. It gained him immediate fame as a composer of merit and originality, and performances in England and America toon followed. The Symphony is scored for a large orchestra, including a piano.
