It is Juily in the year 1806. Drummer Oliver Craw and his cousin Polly Trott have takeff refuge for the night in a stable behind a lonely inn near a mountain pass in French-occupied Italy. Unknown to them Polly's father Sergeant Trott and his comrade Private Pilchard, who are seeking the youngsters, have come to the same inn. They have met two English gentlemen who provide them with a handsome su.pper. Polly and Oliver also go to the Englishmen for help, but to Oliver's horror 'he recognises them as two spies in the pay of Napoleon.
