Lomov, a large, hearty, but very suspicious landowner, has made up his mind that he ought to get married, so he has dressed himself in his formal evening dress to call upon his neighbour, Stepan Stepanovitch Chubu kov, another landowner, to ask for the hand of his twenty-five year-old daughter, Natalya Stepanovna. Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov enters Chubukov's drawing-room.
