THE BESSES o' TH' BARN BAND, conducted by J. C. WRIGHT
TOHN MASEFIELD 'S Cargoes is a song of " contrasts. First we see the 'quinquereme of Nineveh,' the towering galley, with its fivo banks of oars, sailing home to Palestine with its fine-sounding cargo of ' ivory, and apes and peacocks, sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine.'
Next is conjured up a picturo of a stately Spanish galleon' with its load of ' diamonds, emeralds, amethysts, topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidorcs.'
Last scene of all, a violent contrast indeed, is that of the ' dirty British coaster ... butting through the Channel' with her prosaic burden of 'Tyne coal, road-rails, pig-lead, firewood, iron-ware and cheap tin trays.'
There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a

given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the
understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time
- not those of today.
