(Composed for the Philharmonic Concerts in 1815) A BRILLIANT pianist and organist as well as composer, Joseph Jongen was born at Liege in 1873, and studied music at the Conservatoire there. He competed twice for the Prix de Rome, the first time in 1895, when he gained the second prize, and again two years later, winning the coveted award with his Cantata Comala.
In the same year the Belgian Academy awarded him another prize for a Pianoforte Trio. Jongen then gave up the post of assistant Professor in the counterpoint class of the Liege Conservatoire, in order to travel in Germany, France and Italy. The Suite, Tableaux Pittoresques, was written during his stay in this country.
