Although born in the county of Pembroke, Thomas Tomkins came of an old family long established at Lostwithiel in Cornwall. He is accounted one of the finest Elizabethan madrigal writers, and this programme includes a number of his best vocal and instrumental compositions.
Margaret Hodsdon received her principal musical training at the Guildhall School of Music, and later succeeded Nellie Chaplin as harpsichordist in the Chaplin Trio. Her husband, Alex Hodsdon , is well known as a harpsichord maker and restorer.
