Financed by the Merchant Venturers of Bristol, Captain James set out in May, 1631, in search of the North-West passage. James and his crew were the first Englishmen ever to winter successfully in the Far North.
C. M. Maclnnes is Reader in Imperial History in the University of Bristol. He recently broadcast a talk to the Empire on the Charter Day of the Bristol Merchant Venturers.
