The Racing Game

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
A six-part documentary series that tells the inside story of horse racing in this country. Based in the stable yard of Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani for the whole of the last flat racing season, the series follows the hopes of owners, stable lads and punters. It captures the beauty and spirit of the sport, but also portrays the sheer hard work, devotion and luck needed to turn a racehorse into a winner.
Long Odds. Tonight's programme looks at the betting business. Ten million pounds is bet off course every day in Britain and yet very little of this money goes back into the sport. Cumani blames the big bookmakers for this. Vivienne West is a semi-professional gambler who uses her education in psychology to help her on the track. "If you're a loser in life," she says, "you'll be a loser betting, because you'll bring that negative psychology into the way you gamble." Producer Richard Hines

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.
