Kevin Le Gendre presents an exclusive home session from harpist Brandee Younger and bassist Dezron Douglas recorded in lockdown in Brooklyn. Both leading players on the US scene, Younger and Douglas have a long-standing musical association with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane as well as star drummer Makaya McCraven. Their music draws from jazz, RnB, hip hop and beyond.

Also in the programme, Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest, the revered hip hop group known for their innovative use of jazz samples, shares some of the music that inspires him. And bassist William Parker calls in to introduce one of his latest compositions.

Jumoké Fashola presents more highlights from an explosive set by the Hackney Colliery Band recorded for J to Z back in December. The London-based band set out ten years ago to reinvent brass band tradition and feature a genre-bending combination of brass, reeds, percussion and electronics. They're renowned for their high-energy live shows.

Also in the programme, trumpeter Jay Phelps shares some of the music that inspires him. Born in Canada, Phelps moved to London in 1999 and has since become a linchpin of the UK scene. He's worked with greats on both sides of the Atlantic, among them Wynton Marsalis, George Benson and John Dankworth.

Julian Joseph presents live music from American piano great Carla Bley and her trio with Steve Swallow on bass and Andy Sheppard on saxophones recorded at the 2019 Stockholm Jazz Festival. Bley has been a pivotal figure in free jazz since the 1960s when she worked with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and many more and recorded her celebrated jazz opera, Escalator Over The Hill. Now in her 80s she’s still a prolific performer. Her latest trio album, Life Goes On, is playful, lyrical and steeped in the blues.

Also in the programme, manager, promoter, record producer and historian Maxine Gordon shares music and memories from her life in jazz, including a track by her late husband, saxophone great Dexter Gordon.
