A programme selected by Hugh Middlemiss
The BBC Northern Orchestra
Leader, Alfred Barker
Conducted by H. Foster Clark
A conductor driven from his rostrum by an infuriated crowd, a performance made inaudible by dog-whistles, players breaking down with uncontrolled laughter-such things took place at the first performance of more than one musical work that the world now accepts as a masterpiece. When we listen to this music today we are at a loss to understand why its first reception was so hostile.
Hugh Middlemiss has arranged a programme of music which was a first-night fiasco yet has survived the test of time.
