A Change of Sex

Synopsis

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
An Inside Story series
George - The Big Decision
Although he is male, George Roberts ' natural urge is to function as a female. His condition is defined as transexual. When shown last year this documentary followed George's sex-change attempt: now this week we discover what eventually happened.
Early in 1979 George put into effect a decision that had been maturing in his mind since he was a teenager - to become a woman in the fullest sense possible. It is a decision for which George will pay dearly - socially, financially and physically, as electrolysis and massive doses of hormones transform his body.
Meanwhile, in the first stage of his journey across the sexes, George attempts to become a National Health patient and ' comes out' fully by giving his clothing to charity and taking the name Julia.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.
