Before taking up his appointment as organist at the New Savoy Cinema, Exeter, Harold Stringer was for six and a half years organist at the Piccadilly Cinema, Birmingham. At the age of seventeen he was organist at St. Catherine's, Horse Fair, Birmingham, and two years later he obtained his first appointment as an orchestral pianist, playing at a number of Birmingham cinemas. For a time he was also with one of the big steamship companies.
