Year of the French

Synopsis

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
A calendar of French life in 12 film portraits
The Seaside Hoteliers
The month: July
The people: Francoise and James Laporte
The place: La Rochelle
The Hotel Trianon - two-star, 18 rooms, with restaurant, and just a stone's throw from the beach-has been in Francoise Laporte 's family for three generations. Her husband James is not a trained hotetier, but now he's there full-time too.
The holiday season means hard work for the Laportes, who cannot afford a large staff. James has to buy the fresh seafood each morning, run the bar, and act as night porter. Francoise looks after the rooms and the restaurant, helped by her 80-year-old mother. While the holidaymakers enjoy the boating and beaches of the old harbour town of La Rochelle, the Laportes have no time to enjoy themselves. Even on 14 July, National Day in France, while their guests dance in the streets and watch the spectacular fireworks, they must go on working. Narrator MICHAEL DEAN

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.
