Rotand Harding-whose self-confidence has been undermined by the bitter contempt of his wife-meets a young girl, Pilar Gomez , at his weekly Spanish lessons. He takes her out to dinner; they continue to meet and soon she becomes vitally necessary to Roland because through her eyes he sees an image of himself which he can respect.
