Moscow 1868, Yegor Gloumov is a lazy young scoundrel determined to succeed in life with as little effort as possible. By playing on the vanity, stupidity and gullibility of the social circle he wishes to enter, he is about to achieve his ambition.
But - Gloumov keeps a diary; a diary into which he pours his innermost thoughts and true feelings about the posturings and prevarications of his acquaintances in Moscow society. If the diary were to be read by those who feature so prominently in it ... !
