DONIZETTI'S aria comes from his opera The Elixer of Love. The plot of it was adapted from a comedy of Scribe, and the scene is, as usual with this sort of opera, laid in a village with a fair going on. The story is made up of a series of innocent intrigues revolving round a frivolous, rich village girl and her distracted peasant suitor, who is so poor tlia lie can get money to buy the elixir from a quack doctor only by enlisting under a dashing sergeant who tries to cut him out in the rather sketchy affections of his girl, and-well, it is all like that. This song, A furtive trar, is sung by Adina, the rich girl, who, having drunk the ' elixir, suddenly becomes re-enamoured of Nemorino the penniless, and weeps to see him waywardly flirting with some other remarkably good-looking girl. Her emotion is not surprising. since the elixir is nothing but a very raw and heady wine, rightly calculated by the quack doctor to unbalance simple minds very effectively.
THE plot of Goring Thomas's opera Esmeralda, from which this song is taken, was adapted from Victor Hugo 's romance, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The opera, a great success in its day and for a long time in the regular repertory, was first produced at Drury Lane by the Carl Rosa Opera Company in 1883. Thomas was, on the strength of this opera and another called Nadeshda, looked upon as the ' white hope' of an English operatic renaissance, particularly as Esmeraldu was being produced in Germany and France. That hope fell to pieces, if for no other reason than that Goring Thomas died at the age of forty-two. This song is practically the only part of the opera now performed. It is typical of a work that had much beauty to recommend it for a longer life than it actually had.
