The action takes place in a village on the shores of Cape Breton, Canada, at the present time.

Back to the village of his birth comes a young doctor and his wife to take over from the old resident doctor for a year while he attends a refresher course. But the return of the older man, a month earlier than expected, gives rise to a difficult situation...
