1945: In the little Italian village of Santa Vittoria the news of Mussolini's death is followed by another more disturbing announcement. The Germans intend to occupy Santa Vittoria and commandeer the wine that represents the village's wealth. Mayor Bombolini and his fellow citizens are faced with the problem of how to conceal one million bottles of wine from the thirsty invaders.
