Light French Music THE MIDLAND STUDIO ORCHESTRA

on Regional Programme Midland

View in Radio Times

Directed by FRANK CANTELL
IN 1858, nearly a hundred years after Gluck produced his famous opera on the mythological subject of Orpheus and Eurydice, Paris had the good fortune to be offered an audacious burlesque of the story, called Orpheus in the Undenuorld, by- Meilhac and Halevy, two of the wittiest French dramatists of that time, and Offenbach, certainly the gayest and most exhilarating composer in the Europe of his day. There is no question that Offenbach's treatment of it has, for popularity, left Gluck's panting heavily in the rear.
BIZET wrote only a small quantity of piano music, which is hardly representative of his genius. His best effort in this direction, however, was the collection of twelve picees for piano duet entitled ' Children's Games ', which are in the form of cameos after the style of Schumann's ' Scenes of Childhood '. Five of the best numbers were orchestrated by Bizet and called ' Little Suite for Orchestra'. Simple, melodious, fanciful, and charming sum up their characteristics".
