Britain's Katharine Merry should have been competing in the women's 400m but had to pull out at the last minute through injury. The majestic Marion Jones begins her title quest in the first round of the women's 100m, while Britain's Olympic gold hero Denise Lewis takes part in the javelin event of the heptathlon.
