Composer of the Week: Tchaikovsky

on BBC Radio 3

As the extraordinary correspondence with Nadezhda von Meek continues, Tchaikovsky realises that their relationship is all the better because they have never met. He is emerging from the nightmare of his marriage, but attempts to secure a quick divorce are thwarted by the martyred attitude of his wife. He still believes in his own work as a composer, but why are his friends so reluctant to acclaim his music? He longs to return to Russia but can hardly face meeting anyone. With excerpts from the opening scenes of Sleeping
Beauty played by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, conductor Mark Ermier. Repeated Thursday 2 January 11.30pm
