Tonight's programme was recorded at a public concert in the Royal Festival Hall in 1970, the Beethoven bicentenary year. It completes the cycle of symphonies conducted by Otto Klemperer, the leading Beethoven conductor of our day, when he was 85 years old. It was the last time he conducted all nine symphonies, for earlier this year he announced his retirement from the concert platform.
Commentary spoken by Richard Baker

"The series has been as valuable in its own way as Kenneth Clark's Civilisation" (Daily Mail)
