Until the 1950s, off-shore yacht racing was a sport for the rich specialist. Nowadays people from all walks of life take part, especially in the fast-growing fleets of small one-design off-shore racers. A confirmed cruising man, writer and broadcaster Martin Muncaster signed on as crew for the ' E' Boat World Championships held this year on the River Forth. There in wind and rain he found family boats jousting with some of the country's great experts.
