Conducted by H. FOSTER CLARK
Overture, The Italian in Algiers Rossini
Except for the recent Covent Garden revival, The Italian in Algiers has long ago gone from the repertoire, but the Overture is still a popular item in concert programmes. It is, indeed, a characteristic example of Rossini's wonderful gift for sparkling melody. and his favourite device of the crescendo is used very effectively.
Weinberger's opera, Schwanda, the Bagpiper, when produced in Germany two or three years ago proved an enormous success. It came to Covent Garden the season before last and our audience were hardly less enthusiastic. Schtcanda is a first-rate entertainment : good tunes, colour, wit and humour are its outstanding characteristics. The suite consists of five of the best and most tuneful numbers.
