Arena: Dylan's Folk - the Pure, the Bad and the Holy

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
New. A look at the Newport folk festival and the American folk revival of the 60s, which encompassed old time mountain music, blues and gospel. This programme starts BBC4's Bob Dylan at Newport Night. See page 74.

Music: Bob Dylan at Newport Night 9.00pm BBC4
In 1963, Bob Dylan was the darling of America's folk movement and hailed as the spokesman for a generation. By 1965, he was a rock 'n' roll troubadour, fronting a kick-ass band, and forging his own vision. Watch the change over three years in Arena: the Other Side of the Mirror - Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival (9.40pm). Fans will love Murray Lerner's straightforward film - 16 songs, year by year, with occasional punctuations - which act as a rich footnote to 2005's Arena Dylan film. These are performances to treasure, with relaxed and ragged moments dueting with Joan Baez and some trademark harmonica-playing. If you rate Dylan's work by his records, here's a five-album slice of the journey. Above all, the songs are the thing.
Earlier, at 9pm, Arena: Dylan's Folk - the Pure, the Bad and the Holy looks at America's traditional music scene in the early 60s, ranging over folk, blues and gospel. After the main event, there's a re-run of a documentary about Dylan's appearance in a 1963 BBC TV play. Geoff Ellis Still changin': page 12

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.
