Conductor, ERNEST W. GOSS
JESSIE KING (contralto)
Relayed from The Pavilion, Torquay
When Beethoven composed his ballet of Protnetheus in 1800-1 he had been some four years in Vienna, and was gradually becoming known as a composer of importance. He had given his first concert at the Burg Theatre a year before, followed by others, and had spent the winter months composing this ballet, the first really big work, excepting the First Symphony, he had yet attempted. It was put on at the Burg Theatre on March 28, 1801, and scored a great and immediate success. It had a run of sixteen nights, almost a triumph. Haydn heard it, and liked it; he confessed as much to Beethoven.
