Synopsis

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
Described at its first performance as an "English opera", Matthew Locke 's setting of words by Thomas Shadwell is the earliest example of that peculiarly English genre the semi-opera, later used with such success by Purcell.
