Tonight, Tonight, It's West Side Story Night

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
Radio 2 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the innovative Broadway musical West Side Story with a three-hour tribute.
Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and featuring now-classic songs such as Tonight, America, Maria and Somewhere, the music-and-dance stage hit lost the Best Musical Tony to The Music Man, but made stars of composer Leonard Bernstein , lyricist Stephen Sondheim , book writer Arthur Laurentis and choreographer Jerome Robbins. It also spawned the Oscar-winning 1961 film version.
7.00 Something's Coming
Chita Rivera - who originated the role of Anita in both the Broadway and West End productions of West Side Story - recalls the story behind the street-gang musical, from its inception to its opening night.
With input from book writer Arthur Laurentis , orchestrator Sid Ramin , theatre critic John Lahr and others.
7.30 Friday Night Is Music Night Martin Yates conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra in a selection of works by Leonard Bernstein.
The event features singers Hayley Westenra and Michael Xavier.
9.15 From West Side to Worldwide
Stage and TV star John Barrowman (Anything Goes, Torchwood) explores the legacy of West Side Story, featuring many involved in the 1961 film, with archive input from composer Leonard Bernstein and the film's co-director Robert Wise.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

To read scans of the Radio Times magazines from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, you can navigate by issue.
