Blake and Smart
Read by J. C. SQUIRE
THE two poets whose works form the subject of today's reading both lived in the eighteenth century (though Blake lived on until 1827). Both were mystics whose verse failed to receive due recognition at the time ; and both, judged by common standards, were mad. The poems that will be read this afternoon include some of Blake's most exquisitely artless lyrics, such as ' The Tiger ' and ' The Little Black Boy,' and Smart's most powerful poem, tho ' Song to David.'
Those listeners who have enjoyed these Sunday afternoon readings will be interested to know that the substance of them all has been published in book form, under the title of ' The Foundations of Poetry : an Anthology,' and can be obtained at all booksellers, newsagents and bookstalls, price Is.
