Verdi Season

On the eve of BBC2's Sunday evening opera season, which will be broadcast simultaneously on Radio 3 in stereo, Jane Glover , the conductor, and Julian Budden , a leading authority on 19th-century Italian opera, discuss Verdi's astonishing creative development which spanned more than 40 years.
This Verdi series will feature several of the most important international opera productions of 1986. Tomorrow's Nabucco, Verdi's first success, marked the debut of RICCARDO MUTI as La Scala 's musical director. On 3 May LUCIANO PAVAROTTI stars as the assassinated Swedish King Gustavus HI in Un ballo in maschera, in which
CLAUDIO ABBADO inaugurated his new post as musical director of the Vienna State
Opera. And on 10 May comes PETER STEIN 'S magnificent production of Otello from the Welsh National Opera. ' Director JANE WALKER
