'AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE'

Synopsis

We have produced a Style Guide to help editors follow a standard format when editing a listing. If you are unsure how best to edit this programme please take a moment to read it.
' Thirst in the Desert'
- Michael Terry , F.R.G.S., F.R.E.S.
This is the last of three talks by Michael Terry on some of his experiences in the desert country of Western Australia. In 1923, with a friend, he set out by car from Queensland to reach the west coast on what was incidentally the first car journey on this route ever to be made. When they were 125 miles from their final destination they discovered that they had petrol for only about 75 miles, and the last 50 miles had to be accomplished on foot. This would have been simple enough had not mistaken directions led them off their tracks. The broadcast describes their horrifying experiences as, with only a handful of scones, some bully beef, and a tin of oil-fouled water, they struggled on and on in what seemed a hopeless quest. Michael Terry himself was left alone for two nights and a day while his friend set out to secure help.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

To read scans of the Radio Times magazines from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, you can navigate by issue.
