The new serial beginning tonight has been adapted by Michael Voysey from Arnold Bennett's two novels Clayhanger and Hilda Lessways. Taking Clayhanger as a framework, Voysey has interwoven it with the account of the life and love of Hilda Lessways.
The story concerns two groups of people, the one made up of the proud, dark, coltish Hilda, her pathetic mother, and the glib solicitor George Cannon; the other consisting of the Clayhangers - the father, Darius, a self-made printer, his stay-at-home daughter Maggie, the kindly billowing Auntie Hamps, and the shy, gentle son Edwin. It is Hilda's meeting with Edwin that brings the two groups together, and creates the triangle, which involves herself, Edwin, and George Cannon.
