: THE WEEK'S GOOD CAUSE

An appeal on behalf of THE FELLOWSHIP OF ST. MICHAEL
AND ALL ANGELS by the Rt. Rev. the Lord Bishop of BLACKBURN
The purpose of the Fellowship of St. Michael is to assist daughters of professional men who are in moral difficulty. Help is offered in various ways, and among others by the maintenance of a maternity home from which some of the children pass on to the nursery when they are four months old. There is also a small home to which girls can come where they are helped to restart their lives when they leave.
Those who come into the homes pay what they can, but it is often a hard struggle to find the money during a time of unemployment.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged, and should be addressed to [address removed]

: Terence de Marney as 'Gerard' in Charles Reade's famous romance 'THE CLOISTER AND THE HEARTH'

Adapted as a radio serial by H. Beaufoy Milton
Produced by Peter Creswell
Part 10, Gerard's Curse. Ghysbrecht promises restitution for an old wrong
Characters :
A Story Teller ; Gerard Eliassoen ; Elias, his father ; Catarina, his mother; Cornelius, his eldest brother; Sybrandt, his youngest brother ; Margaret, his love ; Ghysbrecht van Swieten, Burgomaster of Tergou ;
Dirck Brower
The scene is Holland in the fifteenth century
Gerard's marriage to Margaret Brandt was interrupted at the altar, and he was compelled to flee from Holland by the enmity of the Burgomaster, Ghysbrecht van Swieten. On his way to Italy he saves a mother and her child in a shipwreck, and is himself saved by a Dominican monk, Father Jerome. Arrived in Rome, he forms a friendship with Pietro Vanucci , the painter. The Signora Teresa , whose life he saved in the shipwreck, introduces him to the Princess Claelia, whose portrait he is commissioned to paint. The Princess falls in love with Gerard, but he tells her that he already has a sweetheart.
He receives a letter supposed to come from Dame van Eyck in Holland telling him that Margaret is dead, and he plunges into wild dissipation, finally throwing himself into the Tiber. He is saved from drowning by Teresa's husband, who had been hired by the jealous Claelia to kill him. He is taken to a Dominican monastery where he meets Father Jerome; here he repents and reenters the Church, becoming Brother Clement. Claelia confesses her plotting to Father Jerome, who sends her on a pilgrimage. On her way she encounters Gerard, and after a further confession she is forgiven by him. The following episode will be broadcast in the National programme on Friday night.

: WALDTEUFEL

A programme devoted to the life and music of this master of the waltz
Henri Waldteufel , son of the composer, will tell of the man
Suzanne Bertin will sing his songs and The BBC Theatre Orchestra, led by Tate Gilder and conducted by Stanford Robinson , will play his
Music
In December last year the centenary of the birth of Waldteufel was celebrated with a special programme, in which M. Henri Waldteufel , the composer's son, told us about his father, and the BBC Theatre Orchestra played his music. Many hundreds of requests were received for the repetition of the programme, or for a new programme devoted to this popular composer. So here is a programme consisting solely of Waldteufel's works. M. Henri Waldteufel will speak again tonight, having travelled specially from Monte Carlo , where he now lives.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

This is a historical record of both the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.
