' Round the Countryside-7,
Summer Butterflies '
By June most of our summer butterflies are to be found on the wing. This afternoon Mr. Erie Parker will describe the various species that are to be seen in a walk through gardens, fields, and woods, both the native English butterflies, such as the Fritillaries, and the migrants that come from abroad, such as the Red Admiral and the Painted Lady. He will also speak of the curious life history of the Large Blue, the caterpillar of which spends part of its life in ants' nests under the ground.

This is the second broadcast of the BBC's Russian production, The Red Sarafan. It is produced by A. W. Hanson , of ' In Town Tonight' fame, and is given under the direction of Captain V. Vivien , Marquis de Chateaubrun, who also acts as compere.
Captain Vivien held a commission in the Imperial Grenadier Guards, and escaped from Russia after the Revolution. He was attached to the Russian Embassy in London in 1920, and since then he has organised ex-officers' balalaika orchestras and choirs, and entertainments reminiscent of pre-war Russia. Emilio Colombo, who conducts the Red Sarafan orchestra, was Court violinist to the Czar.
The idea of The Red Sarafan is to recreate the atmosphere of one of the cafes that flourished on the Isles of the Neva in Tsarist days, with Russian music, Russian singers, and Russian artists throughout. Further broadcasts will be given at intervals of three weeks or a month.

Sir WILLIAM BEVERIDGE , K.C.B.
' He who confuses political liberty with freedom and political equality with similarity has never thought for five minutes about either ', says ' John Tanner ' in the Revolutionist's Handbook and Pocket Companion appended to Man and Superman. ' Nothing can be unconditional ; consequently, nothing can be free.' Again: Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.'
Man and Superman was written thirty-two years ago. But Mr. Shaw has recanted few of the fundamental articles of his creed. He has never cherished any illusions about democracy ; his admiration for certain European dictators, or for his own masterful King Magnus in The Apple
Cart, betokens no fresh development in his views. He himself has certainly never confused political liberty with freedom.
But Shaw has always been the deadliest of sharpshooters in the fight for true freedom, and listeners may confidently look forward to some brilliant marksmanship tonight.
