: New Year's Day Concert

One of the great New Year traditions, this glittering annual event comes live from Vienna. Richard
Baker introduces the second half of this morning's concert (the whole of it can be heard on Radio 3). Lorin Maazel conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme of popular waltzes, polkas and marches by members of the Strauss family; also included is the Shonbrunner waltz by Josef Lanner.
The concert takes place in the appropriately named
Golden Hall of the famous Musikverein and ends, as always, with the Blue Danube waltz and the Radetzky march. Some of the musical items are interpreted by members of the Vienna State
Opera Ballet.
