: Songs of Praise

Songs of Praise joins London and Jamaica in a celebration of Christmas. Jamaica was the first Caribbean member of the Commonwealth to achieve its independence and as everybody of Jamaican origin in the UK will tell you, this year is the 25th anniversary of that event. The year's celebrations are to be rounded off with a special link-up edition of Songs of Praise in which Christians from many churches in Kingston join in singing their favourite carols with relatives, friends and well wishers in London.
Roger Royle introduces the London end and meets Christians of Jamaican origin who talk about their experiences of living in Britain.
In Jamaica Leonie Forbes tours round the island and tells something of its history including 'Jonkunnu', the carols and dance performed each year at Christmas by wandering bands of musicians.
Joy to the world (Antioch); No snow on our Carib island; Island in the sun; Sing de chorus, clap yu han; Silent night; And the glory of the Lord (Messiah); The Virgin Mary had a baby boy; Mary's boy child; Isaiah cried; Rejoice my soul Conductors

Madonna
In the past 150 years there have been thousands of reported appearances of the Virgin Mary , usually to children. The visions warn of disaster and call to prayer. The Pope, a keen visitor to the shrines where the visions are commemorated, has declared 1987-88 a Marian year.
Many women in the Church are troubled by the cult: they say it has gone hand in hand in the Christian tradition with the subjection of women and the fear of sexuality. Yet it remains magnetic. The Virgin Mother still draws thousands of sick and despairing to her shrines in search of wholeness and hope.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
