architect and Portmeirion
The Italianate village of Portmeirion in North Wales is the work of an architect now well over eighty, a personal statement in stone and slate, plaster and tile. Forty years ago Clough Williams Ellis bought this wooded peninsula and began building the village to ' body forth my ideas of fitness and gaiety, and indeed, be me! ' In this film portrait, Clough Williams Ellis is seen in Portmeirion itself and at his family home among the foothills of Snowdon. There he talks about his life and his work, and the film shows something of what he has built, from a model village on the Antrim coast of Ulster to the grave of his friend David Lloyd George at Llanystumdwy.
